What two stories about underwater exploration using the diving bell or other "device" are considered the oddest?

First, in 1687, Sir William Phipps bypassed the diving bell, choosing instead to use an inverted container to try to recover sunken treasure from a Spanish ship off the San Domingo coast worth a reported $308,000.00.  Second, the famous but often misunderstood artist Salvador Dali showed up to give a lecture wearing a diving bell, insisting he give the speech wearing it, which he did.
