What is an elasmobranch?

The elasmobranch refers to the cartilaginous fish that live in the oceans, particularly sharks, rays, and skates.  These fish are characterized by bodies that are cylindrical or flattened, between five and seven sets of gill slits, an upper jaw that is not fused to the cranium, and placoid scales known as dermal denticles.  They also have paired fins and paired nostrils.
