How does coral get its shape?

The individual polyps grow together and form a colony.  The shapes of these colonies depend on a number of factors, including the type of coral and the location in which it is growing.  If there is a lot of wave action, then corals tend to grow flatter and broader; and if the water is calmer, then the coral tends to grow in more intricate shapes.
