The Divers Alert Network or DAN was established at Duke University in 1980 specifically to promote diver safety. This non-profit medical and research organization is the largest association in the world promoting the safety and health of recreational scuba divers. DAN membership provides a 24-hour emergency hotline for injured divers and diving medical information line used for conducting critical medical research. In addition, this organization develops and provides numerous educational programs for divers of all skill levels, as well as medical professionals, dive operators, and others.
