The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small landlocked country bordered by France, Belgium, and Germany. This beautiful little nation has a mild, temperate climate and is home to many lakes, several of which are suitable for scuba diving. One of the most popular diving lakes in Luxembourg is Haute Sure Lake. There are a few different dive sites to explore around this lake; the most compelling of these are historic man-made structures which were submerged when the river was dammed to form the lake in the 1960s.
The Villa of Lultzhausen
Though there are few fish or other aquatic creatures at this site, the ruins of the villa of Lultzhausen are truly fascinating. Also known as the Esch sur sure dive site, the villa of Lultzhausen is located near the town’s castle, which was built in 927 and which sits on a spur of land and which is open to the public. The castle is in ruins, as the villa was before the area was flooded. Near the villa, you’ll find a series of training platforms at 5 meters, 10 meters, 15 meters, and 20 meters deep. There is a small sunken bridge here as well; it is located at a depth of 30 meters.
The Stone Bridge of Insenborn
This historic bridge is ten meters high and is quite impressive; its base is located at a depth of 30 meters and its top is located at a depth of 20 meters. You can travel up and down the riverbed from here, and you’ll also find it easy to locate the remnants of the road that was once served by the bridge. This site is very easy to access, and parking is plentiful. Once you’ve finished your dive, you’ll enjoy warming up on the nearby beach, which is also a good place for any non-diving companions to hang out while you explore the bridge and sunken road.
The Ruins of Liefrange
The submerged village of Liefrange is fascinating and features a number of old foundations. In addition, this site features the ruins of Luutschmillen, which was a flour mill that served the village long ago. Look for small fish and crayfish among the stones, and use careful finning techniques as you make your way around the ruins as the bottom is composed of mud and silt. It is accessed via a road located near the village of Bonnal. There is a large parking area here, and the entrance point is easy to find.
Haute Sure Lake is located at an altitude of 323 meters, so all dive sites here are considered to be altitude dives. Air and Nitrox are available at the Hotel / Restaurant Peiffer, which is located in Insenborn. Two coin operated filling machines are located near Lultzhausen; one is near the youth hostel, and the other is at the rescue center. Accommodations are located nearby; you’ll find everything from camping to luxury villas available. If you plan to be in the Luxembourg area, do consider taking a trip to Haute Sure Lake. Exploring the remnants of historic communities provides interesting insight into days gone by – and a new appreciation for the comforts and conveniences of modern life.
