Objects appear magnified underwater because the flat lens of a diving mask bends light through refraction and this magnifies objects by approximately 33%. The degree of magnification depends on how far the lenses are from the eyes and the distance of the objects; this is a common reason for inexperienced divers to both underestimate and overestimate the distance and size of objects underwater.
