Who invented an air recycling device for exhaled air?

Frenchmen, Sieur Freminet invented the rebreathing device in 1772, making it possible for exhaled air from within the barrel to be recycled.  This device was the first self-contained air device ever developed.  Although this attempt was extremely poor, it would later be redesigned to become one of the most impressive of all developments in scuba diving.
