What were two major developments by Charles Deane with the assistance of his brother John?

Charles and John Deane developed the first dive helmet, followed by the first dive suit.  Charles had been working on the sea since age 14 but at 21, he became a shipyard caulker.  Finding that firefighters were unable to get sufficient air while snuffing out flames within the holds of ships, he patented the “Smoke Helmet” in 1823, an apparatus made of copper, a long leather hose for air supply, and an attachable flexible collar and garment.  However, in 1827, the patent was sold to Edward Barnard and while the concept was good, the helmet design never became popular.  That same year, Charles and John converted the helmet to fit a dive suit the two had designed.  In this case, the helmet was a huge success but the “loosely fitted” dive suite was not.  Once the dive suit was redesigned, it along with the helmet served to pioneer underwater gear.
