What should individuals with hyperthyroidism do in order to start or resume scuba diving?

Divers need to be physically fit and individuals with raised levels of thyroid hormones in their blood stream are likely to have an increased heart rate which produces a strain on the cardiac and respiratory systems. Hyperthyroidism also interacts with the central nervous system and leads to weight loss. Divers with this condition must visit their physician to get treatment for the abnormal thyroid levels. Once these levels have been reduced and there are no major problems with the heart or other body systems, divers can begin or resume diving. Divers with hyperthyroidism should have their cardiovascular system checked thoroughly and their thyroid levels taken three months prior to diving to avoid a potential diving accident.
