What preparation and planning need to be in place before diabetics can scuba dive?

Diabetics that wish to dive should be signed as fit by a physician and have had no complications for at least a year. Diabetic divers must test their blood sugar before and after the dive and should have a dive buddy that is not a diabetic. A diabetic’s dives should not exceed 30 meters and should not be longer than sixty minutes as extended or technical dives may exacerbate hypoglycemia. The dive buddy of a diabetic diver should pay close attention and if the diver looks as though they may be hypoglycemic, they should brought to the surface as soon as possible. Emergency glucose and glucagon must be kept at the surface along with supplies of the diver’s medication.
