Coral dermatitis results from divers brushing up against coral and the resulting wounds and scratches can easily become infected. Treatment includes stopping any bleeding and cleaning the wound with soap, a brush and water. The wound is then best flushed with alcohol or vinegar and any foreign particles debrided. The patient should rest with the affected area elevated and may require antibiotics if the wounds are severe. Anaerobic and clostridial infections are particularly common.
