Is trawling bad? Does it destroy marine habitats?

Trawling is not all bad when done properly.   Using the right equipment can leave the sea bottom relatively unscathed in the grand scheme of biodiversity.  There are a few different types of nets that can be used, including the scallop dredge, the shrimp net, the standard trawl net, and the deep water trawl net.  However, bottom trawling does destroy habitat and it is important to avoid overfishing so that those areas that have been fished can bounce back.
