Divers should wait a minimum of 4-6 weeks before they return to scuba diving to allow the oral tissue to heal and to minimize the risk of further trauma. Mild pain killers may be required while the area remains sensitive; there is no documented risk of these drugs interacting with nitrogen experienced when diving. Lastly, divers must also be able to use their regulator mouthpiece correctly and without discomfort so they can complete their planned dive safely.
