Some species of sponges bore into the surface of coral reefs or of mollusks in order to anchor themselves in a more protected environment. Others are poisonous in order to discourage predators. Sponges are also generally camouflaged to their surroundings, whether they live in the dull cold waters of the Antarctic or among the brightly colored reefs of the tropics.
