Cephalopods can jettison themselves through the water and use small fins to help them propel. They do this by sucking water into their mantle cavity and then expelling that water at high pressure. However, this method of propulsion requires a lot of energy and is only used as a primary means of movement by the squid. Other cephalopods only use jet propulsion when escape is necessary or when chasing down prey. Otherwise they tend to use other means to get around. Octopuses prefer to crawl on the ocean floor and other cephalopods use their lateral fins to swim.
