How deep in the ocean do fish live?

As late as 1860 it was believed that there was no life below 550 m (1800 feet) depth.  However, there has been plenty of evidence that fish live much deeper than this and in 1960 a flatfish similar to a sole was seen through the porthole of a submarine at a depth of 10,912 m (35,800 feet).
