How is the age of a fish determined?

The age of a fish is determined by counting growth lines on either the fish’s scales or by counting the ring-like structures on the small bones called otoliths in the inner ear.  The scales aren’t always accurate as other things can influence the rings on them, but this is very much like counting the rings on a tree.
