Can I dive if I suffer from gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)?

Reflux is the backward flow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus which can cause burning chest pain and regurgitation particularly while in a head down position. Mild reflux can be treated with medication whereas severe reflux is a contraindication to diving because the risk of aspiring gastric contents in to the lungs through the regulator could prove to be fatal. Those individuals not sure of the severity of their GERD should consult with a physician before diving.
