Scuba Diving In Bahrain: Three Fantastic Reef Sites And An Oyster Bed

Believe it or not, Bahrain is a fantastic – out of the way – place to dive. The word “Bahrain” means “two seas” in Arabic; this refers to the freshwater springs that rise up from some areas along the nation’s scenic rocky reefs. This natural phenomenon is believed to contribute greatly to the natural luster of pearls found in Bahrain; in fact, these pearls are thought to be the most beautiful in the world, and before the oil industry came into being, pearl diving sustained many Bahraini families. Ready for an experience like no other? Let’s dive into the warm, shallow waters around Bahrain for a look at some of the best dive sites the nation has to offer.

Fasht al Adham

This extensive reef is located approximately five miles off Bahrain’s east coast and is ideal for all divers, including novices. Well sheltered from weather, it is clear and shallow, with views out into the blue distance. The reef stretches for a distance of about 10 kilometers and is home to numerous marine species; it is also an important spawning ground for fish and corals.

Shetaya

Located about 60 kilometers north of Muharraq, Shetaya is a legendary pearl diving site. The seabed here is almost completely flat, and it is covered with oysters for as far as the eye can see. While there are not many fish here, the oysters are delicious and if you should happen to find one that contains a pearl, that pearl is yours to keep. There is a limit on oysters, however limits are generous and you’ll be able to bring up enough to make a good meal of later. Maximum depth at Shetaya is an extremely manageable 12 meters.

Fasht Najwah

One of the least visited of Bahrain’s dive sites, Fasht Najwah is also one of the most scenic. As it is somewhat off the beaten path, it is often passed up in favor of Abu Thima. This reef is absolutely magnificent and is home to a stunning array of fish and other marine life; small reef fish and crustaceans are plentiful, as are larger pelagics. Fasht Najwah is fed by cool upwellings from further offshore, and is an excellent site for spotting whale sharks. Currents here can be challenging; this site is recommended for experienced divers.

Abu Thima

Located approximately 80 kilometers north of Muharraq, Abu Thima features a massive pinnacle covered in colorful coral. An outstanding place for a drift dive, it is home to turtles, moray eels, and rays. In addition, it is an excellent place to encounter scores of tropical fish, including brightly colored clownfish that nestle in anemones near masses of table coral and huge brain coral formations. This site is nice for all divers and features depths between 8 and 30 meters. It is at its best between May and November, when the water is less choppy.

Almost all diving in Bahrain is conducted via boat as the best reefs are located at least a few kilometers offshore. While you’re visiting, take some time to visit the many cultural sites you’ll find topside, including the Arad Fort in Muharraq, UNESCO World Heritage site Qalat Al Barain, and the Bahraini National Museum, which houses artifacts that date back as far as 9,000 years. You’ll find plenty to keep you busy during surface intervals, and you’ll find that the friendly people, excellent cuisine, and comfortable accommodations are second to none.
