Diving Miyako Island And Beyond: From Satan's Place To Toriike

Also known as Miyakojima, Miyako Island is the fourth largest and the most heavily populated of Okinawa Prefecture’s many islands.  Lying about 400 kilometers east of Taipei, Taiwan, it is renowned for its natural beauty, magnificent beaches, and important Japanese cultural events.  Nearby islands hold even more fantastic surprises. Here are just three of the most popular dive sites around Miyako.

Satan’s Place

One of the most incredible dive sites in Japan, and certainly the best Miyako has to offer, Satan’s Place features depths between 5 and 25 meters.  With currents that can be strong at times, it is suitable for intermediate divers and up; and with both macro life and amazing landscapes, it is a paradise for underwater photographers.  Here, you’ll find huge tunnels that lead into an underwater palace where sweepers and other fish can be seen in abundance; the scene is so beautiful, that it’s hard to understand why the site is named as it is.

Yabiji

Also known as the Phntasmal Island due to the fact that it is exposed to open air once a year, Yabiji is a magnificent site which is suitable for all divers.  Located between 5 and 15 kilometers north of Miyako Island, it is composed of over 100 reefs in various sizes, and is one of the most extensive reef systems in Japan.  Featuring depths between 6 and 30 meters, it is normally quite calm, although the current will occasionally pick up, allowing for a drift.  There are several dive sites to choose from, and depending on where your dive operator takes you, you could find yourself swimming among dogtooth tuna, swordfish, and manta rays, or simply enjoying a relaxing dive along the reef shelf, which features magnificent coral and a wealth of colorful tropical fish and crustaceans.

Toriike

Located along Shimoji Island, the Toriike Sea Passage is a long tunnel that is entered from the ocean side, and which leads into a salt pond.  After diving to a depth of 25 meters, you’ll find the entrance to the tunnel; it is roomy and welcoming.  Once you reach the pond, you’ll be able to observe a thermocline, where cold ocean water meets warmer fresh water, along with a chemocline, where the salinity varies.  This phenomenon sometimes shows itself as yellow or orange lights.  On the way back into the open ocean, you may find yourself swimming against a current.  Toriike is suitable for intermediate divers and up.

While you can dive at Miyako all year long, the best time to visit is between April and November when temperatures are consistently warm both above and below the surface.  There are many excellent dive operators to choose from, who are happy to arrange for excursions to other Okinawan Islands.  In addition, there are fantastic resorts and plenty to see and do topside, including 16th century historic sites and a lovely botanical garden.  Be sure to make your reservations in advance, particularly if you plan to visit during the summer months.
