Diving With The Great Whites Of Guadalupe

Marine life has always been intriguing, and when an island is isolated like Isla Guadalupe in Mexico, it teems with marine life and the flora and fauna becomes incredibly unique and comparatively undisturbed.  Marine life in Guadalupe abounds above and below the waterline.  Diving with the Great Whites of Guadalupe is an adventure not for the faint-hearted, but it can be incredibly exhilarating even for new divers in the company of expert dive masters.  Regular visibility in Guadalupe Island exceeds 80 feet and it has flat calm water most of the time, making it one of the best places in the world to observe the great white sharks in their natural habitat.

The Island of Guadalupe is 20 miles long, 60 miles off the Baja coast and lies 220 miles southwest of San Diego with water temperatures ranging from 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Guadalupe is a spectacular sight geologically with sheer cliffs along the coastline incredibly colored in bands of orange and red.  This makes it a haven for amateur and professional photographers.

Guadalupe Island supports a large population of marine mammals, with large breeding colonies of Guadalupe Fur Seals and Northern Elephant Seals which were almost extinct during the early 1900s. Now protected and in abundance, visitors in cruise boats can easily view them along with California Sea Lions and Bottlenose Dolphin.

First known for world-class sport-fishing, the island is now being known as a Great White Shark habitat. The sport-fishermen discovered a prolific population of Great White Sharks inhabiting the waters around the island.  The presence of the sharks is observed when the water is warm and during the presence of the Yellowfin Tuna which are targeted by sport fishermen. The appearance of the sharks at Guadalupe Island is seasonal, usually in the summer and fall months and this established Guadalupe Island’s reputation as one of the best locations for a Great White Shark encounter.

The Great White Sharks at Isla Guadalupe have a very reliable population that television networks have shot documentaries featuring them, and they have been the focus of attention and major research efforts. Shark Diver is one of the organizations at the forefront of the conservation and research efforts in Isla Guadalupe. Their data fundamentally changed what is known about the resident sharks of Guadalupe and their seasonal behaviors.

People flock the Island of Guadalupe since it has established itself as one of the world’s top destinations for cage diving with the great white sharks.  White shark cage diving is the ultimate white shark encounter.  This pristine site for white shark diving was relatively unknown ten years ago unlike today where people from around the planet congregate here to meet the shark conservation and media stars.  Many divers also come to visit the 14’ Shredder shark with his unique dorsal fin and the 15’ Bruce together with many other tagged animals through the efforts of the researchers and conservationists.

Television shows like Shark Week and Great Migrations of National Geographic have featured the white sharks of Guadalupe, and many stories in magazines and newspapers have been printed about them, luring more people to go Diving with the Great Whites of Guadalupe!!
