Who wrote a 1,000 page collection of physiologic studies on pressure changes?

In 1878, Frenchman Paul Bert published a 1,000 page collection, La Pression Barometrique, which explained the many effects of pressure change.  He explained that nitrogen gas bubbles were responsible for decompression sickness and suggested that ascending gradually would prevent the problem.  Bert also showed that recompression could relieve pain.
