In 1985, Robert Ballard headed a US-French team who found the Titanic by using a remote controlled camera. The ship sits 400 miles away from New York, broken in two at a depth of 12,500 ft. In 1912, on April 15, the world's largest ship sank in under 3 hours after hitting an iceberg. A total of 1522 people died including crew and passengers. Since 1985, the United States and France have frequently revisited the sight; the French have been able to even recover artifacts. In 1997, James Cameron released a movie about the “Titanic” staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet which achieved commercial success and was once the highest grossing film of all time.
