What was the turtle?

In 1776, the Turtle was invented by David Bushnell.  It was the first submarine in the world to be used in combat.  It was created as a way of attaching explosives to ships.  Bushnell designed the Turtle to use on the vessels of the British Royal Navy that were occupying harbors in North America.
