What is coral bleaching?

Coral bleaching is the whitening of a coral reef structure; this is due to stress of the coral and the loss of pigmentation of the zooxanthellae.  If the stress is short-lived, then the coral can generally bounce back, but if the stress is severe and/or long-lived, then the coral will die.
