What are the risks involved with free diving?

There are a number of risks when it comes to free diving.  First, if a free diver hyperventilates prior to their dive, they risk a hyperventilation blackout when they dive.  Other risks include shallow water and deep water blackouts, which are directly related to the pressure of the gases in the bloodstream and lungs.
