What are the main causes of an arterial gas embolism (AGE)?

An arterial gas embolism is most commonly caused by the expansion of respiratory gases upon ascent. It also occurs when a diver holds their breath while ascending and where there is low pulmonary compliance in the lungs. It can also occur in those with concurrent abnormal respiratory pathology.
