Yes, and prior to starting the Basic Open Water Dive certification, the instructor would ask each person to provide a demonstration of current water skills. This simply test would involve you completing an untimed 200 yard swim while donning a mask, fins, and snorkel, and floating/treading water for 10 minutes.
