Are ear problems commonly associated with scuba diving?

Yes and in fact, ear problems are one of the most common problems that divers face, especially Aural Barotraumas, otherwise called “ear squeeze” that affects everyone who dives.  In order to dive safely and without injury, the ears must be healthy.  Divers must take time to clear their ears properly while descending and then maintain the air passages of the ears and throat throughout the dive.  While many ear problems will not prevent someone from diving, however, divers with unilateral hearing loss, chronic infection, or a perforated eardrum should refrain from diving until the condition improves.
